Karen joined SCC in October 2022. Originally from interior Alaska, she earned a B.S. in Rural Sociology from Cornell University, an M.S.in Soil Science from University of Vermont, and a Ph.D. in Crop Science from Washington State University. Karen enjoys working at the interface of science and practice and has over 15 years of combined experience working with the agricultural community through roles with land grant university extension and a conservation district. Over the years, she has worked on projects involving soil health, biochar, compost, and cover crops. In her free time, she likes to explore the San Juan Islands with her husband and two kids from her home base in Anacortes WA.
